God’s Work in Making Us Holy
Romans 15:16 ESV to be a minister of Christ Jesus to the Gentiles in the priestly service of the gospel of God, so that the offering of the Gentiles may be acceptable, sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
Review:
OT pattern of Levitical Priesthood
Priests and God’s people offer to God
Priest do the rituals, e.g., offering washed to symbolize cleansing (cf., Lev 1)
Paul NT ministry
He serves like a priest
He offers the Gentiles/the Gentile offers to God
(Today's Word) The Holy Spirit sanctifies - cleanses the offering to make it holy and acceptable to God
Leviticus 1 is about Laws for Burnt Offerings
The tent of meeting symbolizing God's presence in the midst His people.
Male sacrifice without blemish (baka, tupa, kambing)
Leviticus 1:4 KJV And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him (to take away sins).
- Leviticus 1:5 ESV Then he shall kill the bull before the LORD, and Aaron's sons the priests shall bring the blood and throw the blood against the sides of the altar that is at the entrance of the tent of meeting.
Lev 1:9a ESV but its entrails and its legs he shall wash with water (for cleansing/purification). Inihalintulad ito ni Paul sa work ng Holy Spirit in cleansing the believers.
Lev 1:9b ESV And the priest shall burn all of it on the altar (at the entrance), as a burnt offering, a food offering with a pleasing aroma to the LORD.
Word: God’s Work in Making Us Holy
Romans 15:16 ESV …sanctified (ἁγιάζω, hagiazō) by the Holy Spirit.
What is sanctification?
Greek root word
ἁγιάζω, hagiazō (hag-ee-ad'-zo)
From G40; to make holy, that is, (ceremonially) purify or consecrate
Translation
TAB …palibhasa'y pinapaging banal ng Espiritu Santo.
AMP …sanctified [made holy and set apart for His purpose] by the Holy Spirit.
Truth:
Sanctification is the Holy Spirit’s work is making the believer holy and acceptable before God.
Important question:
Why do we need to be sanctified or made holy by the Holy Spirit?
Hebrews 12:14 ESV Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord.
This is not only about knowing God and understanding His will.
This talks about seeing God in heaven. Nilinaw ito sa Revelation 21:27..
Revelation 21:27 ESV But nothing unclean will ever enter it (the holy city–the New Jerusalem), nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life.
Truth:
Without holiness no one will be with God.
Problem is, You can’t make yourself holy.
Another problem, The law can’t make you holy.
James 2:10 ESV For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become guilty of all of it.
Romans 3:20 ESV For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin.
The solution, Only God can make you holy.
1 Corinthians 6:11 ESV And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
1 John 1:9 ESV If we confess our sins (to God), he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
How does God make you holy?
1. He calls on you to repent
Mark 1:15 ESV and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
Acts 2:38 ESV And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
God’s part: calling
Our part: repentance (change of mind)
Nag-remorse sya (regret, metamellomai)
Nagpakamatay kaysa magbalik-loob
Yung prodigal son ay natauhan, at nagbalik-loob…
Hinuha ang mana
Nagpakasasa hanggang maubos ang mana
Nagtrabaho bilang tagapakain ng baboy
Nagsisi, at nagbalik-loob
How does God make us holy?
2. Upon repentance, He forgives your sins through the finished work of Christ on the cross
2 stages of how God forgives and makes you holy:
Positional holiness: He justifies and sanctifies you (just-as-if-you-never-sinned)
1 Corinthians 6:11 ESV And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Kailang ito nangyari?
Noong ikaw ay nagpahayag ng iyong pananampalataya…!
Romans 10:9-10 ESV because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (10) For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
Ephesians 1:7 ESV In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace.
Romans 5:9 ESV Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God.
2 Corinthians 5:21 ESV For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.
Progressive holiness: He cleanses you from present sins
1 John 1:9 ESV If we confess our sins (to God), he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Jude 1:24-25 ESV Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy, (25) to the only God, our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion, and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen.
Lastly, God’s plan is to make us totally holy…
3. Upon the return of Christ, God will make us totally holy (glorification)
Closing
Romans 15:16 ESV …sanctified by the Holy Spirit.
Revelation 21:27 ESV But nothing unclean will ever enter it (the holy city–the New Jerusalem), nor anyone who does what is detestable or false, but only those who are written in the Lamb's book of life.
Important truth:
Only those who are holy will enter the New Jerusalem
We need God to make us holy
We need to repent and believe (initial act)
In Jesus Christ for our forgiveness and justification
We need to keep repenting and believing (ongoing act)
James 4:7-8 ESV Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. (8) Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
1 John 1:9
What does this truth have to do with my problems?
Problema sa negosyo, sa trabaho, sa pamilya, etc.
Since God made you holy, it will keep you from doing bad things.
God made you holy–positionally, pinaging-banal ka ng Dios.
Since God keeps forgiving you, it helps lighten your heavy loads.
